GETTING READY FOR YOUR SENIOR SHOOT
IT'S ALL ABOUT THE DETAILS
I know this is a lot to read, but if you follow these tips, you will look like a rock star!
Once your session is booked, we will have a phone consultation so that I can get to know you and your style, as well as your hopes and dreams for your shoot! I want your session to be as uniquely you as we can. We will discuss location - do you want dreamy backlit field images, or are you an uptown girl who likes to dress up in the city, want an editorial shoot? We’ll also talk about styling, outfit choices, accessories, hair and makeup, etc.to match your location choice.
When selecting the look for your portrait session, pay close attention to all the details such as fingernails, hair, teeth, eyebrows, makeup, jewelry, shoes, socks, toenails etc.
Honestly...it helps if you bring your Mom or sister or best friend to help with outfit changes, lipstick, etc.
~ Sleep - Try to get a lot of REST the night before your shoot. Don’t stress over it; trust me -
we’re going to have a great time together! If you are getting early AM shots, I suggest
applying cold compresses to your eye area for a few minutes before applying your makeup to
reduce puffiness. Make sure you EAT before your session so you’re not miserably hungry. If
you are bringing family or friends to your session, feed them, too! And be sure they’re aware
we’ll be photographing for a couple of hours.
~ Skin – AVOID SUNBURN! Not only is it bad for you, but it is bad for your appointment,
because we will probably have to reschedule. Red or peeling skin is not a good accessory!
~ Acne - Don't worry about having a few blemishes! These will be removed during retouching, however, we do not remove scars or birth marks unless requested to.
~ Hair - Don't try a new hairstyle the morning of your session. Play around in the weeks
beforehand to see what works and what doesn't. You might even want to have a professional
do this for you. Go for a “timeless” hairstyle. Use a little extra hair spray, but not so much
that your hair is stiff. You can even change up during your session, put it up in a ponytail or messy bun.
Get a haircut at least a month in advance for girls or a week in advance for guys, so that the
hair has time to grow a little and look more natural. Don’t do anything drastic that you might
regret later! Especially a color change!
If you maintain coloring on your hair, try to schedule a color appointment that will give you
the right amount of washing before your photos. (Everyone who colors has that “sweet
spot” they like better than the first day!)
Remember, you still want to look like YOU in your photos. So if you’ve had long hair for quite
some time, now might not be the time to get a short haircut if you’re not sure that you’ll love
~ Makeup - Wear what you usually wear, but slightly darker than normal. Please use care while
applying eye makeup (eye liner, mascara), as your eyes will be the focal point of many of your
photos. Ladies, make sure you use new mascara to avoid clumps
~ Make sure to bring your makeup bag for touchups, a brush, and a towel if it is a warm location
~Let's talk lips....moisturize your lips and bring chapstick, lipstick or gloss with you to reapply-it makes a difference.
~ Nails - Your hands will be showing in many of your photos. Be sure that if your nails are
painted, the polish is not chipped. Please choose a neutral color. Same applies to toenails if
you are wearing open-toed shoes. We might do some bare-feet shots also, so make sure your
feet look their best! GUYS – this goes for you, too!!
~ Shaving - I know it may seem obvious, but don’t forget to shave your legs and underarms if
they may be seen in photos.
~Don't get your eyebrows waxed or a haircut the day of your shoot, do it at least a few days ahead of time.. Do inspect and pluck those eyebrows a few days before for those closeups.
~ You'll want to wear what you normally wear, but "kicked up a notch". Add some funky
jewelry, a hat, leggings, a scarf, a belt, or some other accessory. Just be sure that the
accessory is not so loud that it distracts from you. Mix up your clothing from dressy to casual, vary the styles you choose.
Be sure to run your choices by mom and dad, or you might end up with photos you love that they won’t order for you. Can’t decide what to wear? Bring lots of wardrobe choices, and between the two of us, we'll make sure you look your absolute best!
~ Try your clothing on in advance to be sure it fits comfortably and is flattering. Bend over, sit
down, etc. and make sure that you don’t have skin showing where it shouldn’t be in certain
positions and that you’re able to do such movements.
~ Make sure each piece of clothing is clean and wrinkle-free.
~Make sure the colors you pick bring out a twinkle in your eyes, and compliments your skin tone.
We recommend wearing a solid color or something with a splash of color to it for a nice contrast in your photos. Bring a variety of colors – not 3 blue outfits.
~ Avoid horizontal stripes, loud patterns, or neon colors. If you don’t like your arms, don’t choose sleeveless shirts or dresses. We want the clothes to accent you; not the other way around.
~ If you intend to wear a “strappy” dress or light-colored clothing, be sure to wear or bring the
appropriate undergarments that will not show in your photos.
~Don’t forget accessories for each look that you will change into, I have had cases where my subject didn’t think to bring a new set of jewelry, shoes, hat, etc. for their clothing change and the look ended up not as “pulled together” as it could have been.
~ Hats are great for a few shots, but please don’t wear one to your session and get “hat head.”
~Be sure to bring along shoes, jewelry and accessories to match each outfit.
~It’s also a good idea to wear a cami or sports bra underneath for easy wardrobe changes.
~Think layers, or maybe a pair of your favorite jeans then change up the tops, add a jacket, scarf, hat and accessories. ( I have a pop up changing cabana for any full changes needed)
~Bring a formal dress for some great dramatic and dressy shots
~FOR THE GUYS~
~Get your haircut at least a week before, don't try to get a new cut or style the day of your shoot in case you aren’t happy with it.
~Make sure you clean your fingernails, manscape those eyebrows if needed and bring a towel if it is a warm location.
~When choosing your outfits, vary your styles, jeans and a t-shirt, you can add a dress shirt, tie, jackets, college sweatshirt etc.Think about dressing up for one look, maybe add a coat and tie to those jeans with a pair converse.
~Avoid horizontal stripes, loud patterns, or neon colors Make sure you match your shoes and belt and bring them to match whatever wardrobe change you have. Try your clothing on in advance to be sure it fits comfortably and is flattering. Can’t decide what to wear? Bring lots of wardrobe choices, and between the two of us, we'll make sure you look your absolute best!
~ Make sure each piece of clothing is clean and wrinkle-free.
~Don't forget to bring accessories for each look, hat, shoes, scarf etc. If you forget to bring those, then your looks won't be as "pulled together" as you would like
~Make sure to bring different socks if needed to avoid clashing with the next look
~ Don't forget to be clean shaven
~Guys, don’t forget to bring a brush especially if you bring a hat
We DO reschedule for inclimate weather, we watch the weather reports and try to stay on top of the weather reports, however, this is Texas and we never know what to expect from day to day.
~ People - Parents are strongly encouraged to be present during the entire session. (Mom and
Dad – I do discourage barking orders or bickering during your child’s session… remember, this
is supposed to be fun, and we want him/her to be happy and relaxed.) You are welcome to
bring a friend or two as well.
*I do not allow cell phone pics over my shoulder*
Once you are ready after hair and makeup, we will meet up at your location of choice. Do you need to know how to pose? Nope, that’s what you have me for! I know tons of ways to position you based on your body type and what you are wearing. The slightest movement one way or another, can make the biggest difference on how you look on camera…I’ve studied it, and I can help you get those magazine style poses!
HOWEVER, I know it sounds silly, but practice DOES make perfect. Practice different expressions and
poses in the mirror before your session. Here are a couple of things to try:
*Look in the mirror and form a smile with your mouth. Now try it again, this time
thinking about whatever makes you happy, and try to let that smile reach your eyes.
By this, I mean, do you see how when you naturally smile, the lines form around your
eyes and they light up? THIS is what we’re aiming for – not a “deer in the headlights”
* Try some different expressions, such as the dreaded “serious face” or smiling with no
teeth showing. See what you like and what you don’t.
* Look at the senior gallery on my website. Take note of some of the poses that you like.
This is your chance to live it up, relax, have fun, try out some cool poses, check out the "jump" video for some jumping ideas https://youtu.be/HpocKl5ncGk Just laugh, smile, get those "off guard shots" and totally have fun with it. Don't be afraid to POSE...check out these vids for some ideas https://youtu.be/YsaD7jhYC_o https://youtu.be/JePH3DBimsE
Most of all, we will have FUN! Once we are rolling, I’ll show you some images on the back of my camera to show you how gorgeous you already are!
As far as props go...bring the things that are uniquely you. Your favorite books and a pair of glasses, your musical instrument and sheet music, letterman jacket, school pennants, anything for the college you plan to attend like a sweatshirt, hat, pennant etc. Make sure that the images we end up with show who you really are...if you are a nerd...show it....if you play the electric guitar and love Metallica...get lit and show it off. Bring your Kindergarten Graduation picture to show how far you have come. Be creative!
~ Last thing….Go through EVERYTHING one more time before leaving
the house to make sure you’ve got it all. Make sure you bring shoes, jewelry, accessories and for every outfit, a water and all your props.
Make sure you have your Touch-up stuff as well – lip balm, lipstick, powder, hairspray, etc.
~~Sneak Peeks~ After the session, we will upload the images to our computer, and then we will pick a couple of our favorite shots to edit and place on the Charmed Photography Facebook page and the Instagram for a sneak peek of your session. Be sure to follow us on both! Please tag yourself and share the album/images on your wall. Some sessions will be posted on the Blog after all the editing is completed, but not all. If your session is posted on the blog, a link will be posted on the Charmed Facebook Page.
~Editing~ We would love to get everything back as soon as possible, but with high demand for pictures it may take up to 3-4 weeks for your pictures to be ready. All the images are sifted through and we select the best ones to edit and then each of those are checked for quality, color, composition, some will be cropped and any touchups will be done. Even though you will hear a lot of snapping from the camera, we will only edit some of the best images from each pose, and each location. With a large group, or groups with children, sometimes it takes 5 snaps of the camera to get the right shot. Not all of our shots require all smiles.
~Your Gallery~ All of your edited pictures will be placed in an online Gallery, we do not give unedited images to clients ever. Your Gallery Link will be sent to you by shootproof.com You can easily order prints straight from the Gallery to be delivered to your door or use your personal print release via email for use with ordering prints. You can order as many prints of each picture as you like. Your Gallery will be high resolution, 4x6 sized images unless otherwise indicated. You can download all of the images with one click of a button, and the images will download into a zip file and save onto your computer for you to keep. Some collages and specialty items may be created for your Gallery, however you are not limited to just these collages.
**Do not alter or add filters to your images, and please download the images on your phone rather than screenshot as that will diminish the quality of the image. **
~Printing~ I recommend ordering directly from the online Gallery or using York Photo Lab online for all your print products.
*You can earn FREE prints by leaving a positive testimonial on google.com for Charmed Photography of Mesquite Tx. and/or referring a Senior that books with us*
